Category:Digital art1. Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a method of amplifying (electrically amplifying) a modulated electromagnetic radiation signal (e.g., a signal carrying modulated video and/or audio information). More particularly, the invention is directed to an electronic device which utilizes a group of electronic amplifiers and, more particularly, a transistor to amplify a modulated electromagnetic radiation signal.
2. Description of the Related Art
Video, audio and other types of electrical information are typically transmitted through an electromagnetic radiation signal. These signals are transmitted from a source to a destination through transmission lines, such as coaxial cables, waveguides, and the like. In many cases, such signals have a finite amplitude level, and thus require amplification prior to transmission.
The trend towards the development of higher data rate transmission systems has created a demand for high power, high bandwidth amplifiers. This demand has resulted in a shift to the use of more conventional technologies (e.g., field effect transistors (FETs), heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), etc.) to amplify the electromagnetic radiation signals. Unfortunately, conventional amplification systems have inherent difficulties in amplifying modulated electromagnetic radiation signals.
Conventional methods for amplifying modulated electromagnetic radiation signals utilize a conventional amplifier or transistor. In these methods, a radio frequency (RF) signal (i.e., the modulated electromagnetic radiation signal) is input to the amplifier. The amplifier output typically has a desired DC voltage level (or current level). However, it is usually desired that the amplifier output have a DC voltage or current level that is equal to the input DC voltage or current level, respectively. Therefore, the amplified output must be at the same DC voltage level or DC current level as the input DC voltage level or current level, respectively. However, conventional electronic amplifiers, such as transistors, suffer from several problems.
For example, these amplifiers often suffer from significant power loss. Thus, the output of the amplifier may only be at about 80% of the input level. Consequently, the amplifier must be large and consume much power. Another problem with conventional amplifiers is that they
